Banarasi vs Kanjivaram Saree: Which One is Right for Your Wedding?
Choosing a wedding saree is one of the most personal decisions a bride makes. Two names come up again and again: Banarasi and Kanjivaram. Both are pure silk, both are heirloom-worthy — but they are very different in feel, look, and occasion. Here's how to choose.
The Weave & Origin
Banarasi sarees come from Varanasi and are woven with fine silk threads interlaced with real zari (gold or silver). The motifs — florals, paisleys, jalis — are Mughal-inspired and delicate. Kanjivaram (or Kanchipuram) sarees originate from Tamil Nadu and are woven with a heavier mulberry silk, with bold temple borders and contrasting pallu in a technique where the body and border are woven separately and then interlocked.
Fabric & Weight
Banarasi silk is lighter and more fluid — easier to drape and comfortable for long ceremonies. Kanjivaram is denser and heavier, with a characteristic sheen and stiffness that holds its shape beautifully in photographs.
Zari Work
Banarasi zari is finer and more intricate, often covering the full body in subtle patterns. Kanjivaram zari is bolder — thick gold borders are a signature — and the contrast between body colour and border colour is a defining feature.
Occasion Fit
- Banarasi: Ideal for North Indian weddings, receptions, and festive occasions like Diwali and Eid. Also a favourite for brides who want elegance without heaviness.
- Kanjivaram: The traditional choice for South Indian weddings, especially Tamil and Telugu ceremonies. Also popular across India for its grandeur and longevity as a heirloom piece.
How to Identify Pure Silk
Look for the Silk Mark certification — it guarantees the saree is made from pure natural silk. At Valli House of Weaves, all our silk sarees carry this assurance.
